“Hidden amongst the sandstone and silence of the Red Cederberg…”
The Bokpad is Red Cederberg’s guided and tailored multiday wilderness hiking trail, established in 2026 and is a unique 34km hiking trail that starts and ends at the Onderhuis, the historic farmstead at Keurboschfontein. The route takes you through the largely unexplored and untouched mountains of the Red Cederberg, up the Langkloof Valley and into Gabriel’s Pass before finishing at the iconic Wolfberg Arch. We like to think that the trail is difficult enough that you feel like you’ve achieved something, and easy enough that most people can walk it. Guides play a crucial role in protecting natural ecosystems and minimizing environmental impact. Responsible practices ensure the preservation of wilderness areas for future generations.
THE HIKE
Day 1 – starting at 854m elevation
Your journey begins at the historic Onderhuis on Keurboschfontein, where you’ll arrive in the afternoon and ease into the slower rhythm of life on the farm. Enjoy homemade snacks and refreshments before settling in. You’ll share a hearty dinner, meet your hosts and guides, and receive a short introduction to the days ahead. It’s an evening to relax, connect, and prepare for the adventure that begins at first light.
Day 2 – 10Km +/-600m elevation
After breakfast, a short drive takes you to the start of Johan se Voetpad, where the trail climbs steadily towards the iconic Wolfberg Arch. From here, you’ll descend into Gabriel’s Kloof, stopping for lunch and, weather permitting, a refreshing swim in the mountain rock pools. before descending into the Langkloof Valley, where we will spend the night immersed in the community below Tafelberg. Expect something freshly baked and a farm-style dinner.
Day 3 – 9km +/-350m elevation
Following a wholesome farm breakfast, the trail winds through a landscape rich in San Rock Art and history. Departing Langkloof, you’ll walk via Die Val to Santjies se Werf, where a light snack is served beneath the trees before continuing to Klipwerf. Here you’ll spend the night in restored stone cottages once used by local herders. A cold beverage awaits on arrival, followed by dinner prepared over the open fire beneath the stars.
Day 4 – 10km +/-600m elevation
Your final day begins at Klipwerf, following the original goat and sheep herding trails up Grootberg. After a pitstop for homemade rusks and freshly brewed coffee, the trail meanders through diverse mountain fynbos, where hardy shrubs and seasonal wildflowers contrast with the stark, rocky landscape, before a gentle descent through Bakenkloof returns you to the Keurboschfontein farmstead. Celebrate the end of your journey with a glass of bubbles and one final dinner around the fire.

FAQ’s
Best time of year?
The summer months are obviously warm and great for swimming, but the heat can be brutal for hiking.
We only offer this experience between Autumn and Spring. More moderate daytime temperatures make the hike more enjoyable, but the winter months provide cold nights and fresh mornings. Flowers are blooming throughout this time of year, but nothing beats the August/September flower season.
How tough is the Bokpad?
The route has a fair bit of elevation change but 99% of the trail is on maintained paths that are not unreasonable to navigate. We take time to explore and stop and smell the flowers. There is no rush on these routes but we suggest it only for children from 11 and up. And for reasonable fit persons younger than 75.
