Klipwerf Veldhuisies

“A remote Escape with some creature comforts for the kitted 4×4 traveller…”

The Klipwerf Veldhuisies are self-catering veld cottages ideal for the fully-equipped 4×4 traveller…

This secluded and private site is situated in mountain renosterveld, just off the Wupperthal route on the road to Voelvlei, 6 kilometers passed Red Cederberg’s base at the farm Onderhuis on Keurbosfontein.

The Stone Cottages consists of beautiful examples of the original old-style Sederberg stone cottages of which very few, if any, are left today.

It is ideal for the traveller who prefers complete freedom in a quiet setting. It has spacious, thatched stone huts, as well as thatched braai facilities. The neat ablution facilities have hot showers, as well as flush toilets.

Klipwerf Stone Cottage is within easy reach of a variety of Cederberg activities and attractions such as river swimming, wine tasting, horse riding, rock art, observatory star gazing, and 4×4 routes to name a few and at Klipwerf you can do mountain climbing, leisure walking and mountain biking.

The shortest Cederberg Arch Hiking Trail starts at Onderhuis on Keurbosfontein. For many visitors, a Cederberg hiking trip to the Wolfberg Arch, one of the icons of the Cederberg mountains is a must. Our short easy walk Wolfberg hiking trail now makes it possible for almost anyone to reach it. Permit and directions are available at Keurbosfontein.

If you book at Klipwerf, we will not take any further bookings from other visitors. You can therefore enjoy total exclusivity in this secluded mountain setting.

Open Period
Klipwerf Stone Cottage is open to visitors from the autumn, winter and spring months of April to October. In April the hot summer days give way to the gentle climate of autumn when the weather is mostly mild and gentle.

The average rainfall for winter is about 250 mm, with occasional snow on the Wolfberg. During the spring months, Klipwerf undergoes a transformation where the veld is covered in an abundance of life, with flowers and birds everywhere. This renosterveld biome also has great varieties of bulbous and geophyte plant species, most of which are dormant under the ground during the hot summer months.

96% of South Africa’s unique renosterveld has been converted into farmland or residential areas. It is gone forever and with it went thousands of rare plants, which are now extinct. The remaining renosterveld, as at Klipwerf, is very precious indeed. Gentle walks along the mountainsides in spring can lead you to wonderful plants.

Closed Period
During the summer months from November to March, KlipWerf is closed to visitors. However, where possible, we will consider special requests to make KlipWerf available during this time.

The starting point of the shortest and easiest walking trail to the famous Wolfberg Arch, as well as the nearby popular rock climbing spots of Sneeuberg and Tafelberg, are ±30 minutes (13 km) drive from KlipWerf, on the Wupperthal 4×4 road.

A day trip can be taken to the historic village of Wupperthal in the remote Tra-Tra valley, a missionary station that was established in 1830 by German missionaries. The route there will take you past the villages of Langkloof and Eselbank, an area with colourful traditions. It is recommended that you use a 4×4 vehicle for the trip to Wupperthal.

PLEASE NOTE: Permits and routes for the Wolfberg Hiking Trail are obtainable at the Keurbosfontein farmstead.
